There are many rods that you could use. It should be about 7 feet long or more, fairly heavy, but with enough tip action to cast with unless you are just trolling. I have several that I have used in both places, mostly for salmon or steelhead, but also bottom fishing for rockfish.

You might look at the rods at Cabelas.com

There are a number of places to buy fishing tackle from walmart to cabelas, if its a rod for fresh water you want then your going to most likely have to get a different rod to that of saltwater, although you can use both i find that a saltwater rod will be too bulky for fresh water fishing, please include some more information as to what your fishing for and how and i can help you out a little more

You a pick up a good rod and reel for a reasonable price at WalMart. If you are fishing in the river for cat fish get a heavy action rod with a reel that will hole up to 50 pounds tet line. Dont want to miss the big one
