Well im not from the uk or anything but when i river fish
i throw the line upstream
usally cast in slow flowing water (even if you cant see fish they are there!)
near a log thats in a river (dont cast to close)
white/silvery water (if it looks like sorta like that or clear)
dont stand like right by the water fish can see you
i would use night crawlers

never been sea fishing so good luck with that
have fun fishing!
References :
start practicing casting with him, like in your front yard with just a sinker on it, no hook.research fish in your area, so you can identify what you have caught.just have fun, take a little cooler with drinks food etc... bring plenty of bait, bobbers(red and white colored ball) for the little one so he can see where his line is at.bring a net and a stringer for the fish you have caught. don't forget about pliers, or hook remover, and a pocket knife.
hope I helped and have fun!
