Why do Natives have diplamatic immunity towards DFO and Fishing regulations?
I live in North Vancouver and i know the Capilano River VERY well. I spend about 600-700 hours fishing yearly. And the natives are allowed to net, snag, and divert salmon. The hatchery releases 650′000 Coho fry and only 12′000 return. Thats a return rate of 1.8%. Thats not that good for one of the best hatcheries in B.C. This is the way it goes down. 400′000 get killed by disease and predators, then another 200′000 by natives and 37′000 by fishing boats and 1′000 by sport fishermen. If they made these natives not allowed to snag with huge trihooks and use nets. And actually have normal regs i bet they would have a return of at least 3-4% maybe even 5 or 6. But most people dont know what they are doing. They put huge trihooks and weights on, cast across and then wait and rip the hook back. But the main problem is the shopping carts. When the river is really low they build the rocks up so the fish swim around it and wait in the bay but they go to close and the suckion pulls them into the carts and they just pull them up by the thousands. Does anyone know about this? or should i flim it and post on Youtube or something?

This is a good question and the answer is yes you should post it. In the US it is regulated and most of the indian reservation that I came across have laws to preserve fish, which are basically the same as theDFG. It was their land like the others said but at the time we took it it was probably worth a few million and obviously we have paid it back. Another thing to consider is Canada and America wouldnt be great nations as it is if we did not take it over. They complain about the lost of culture and what not but they speak English and practice Western culture. I do not know how many indians live in your section of canada but taking 200k worth of fish is enough to feed the whole nation not the indian nation. I know where I live a fillet of salmon is probably worth 5.99 it is probably a quarter of a pound. Now the average Coho is probably between 5-15lbs so 10 is the middle. 200,000 times 5.99 is 12 million dollars so they have fished what we owe them already

Because we stole all their land.

I live in Vancouver (neat haha)
It’s because the land was stolen from them by whitey.
If i came into your house and told you that you could still live there but it was mine now and I was going to live there, then the least I could do is not limit the amount of time you get to spend watching TV (fishing) and I certainly wouldn’t expect you to pony up any money to help pay the property taxes.
These immunities were granted a long time after the land was stolen from the natives during a more politically open era when they felt they could stand up and speak freely to get back what was taken from them without fear of… well anything us crazy white people are capable of doing when we want our way haha
It’s reparations, and I think it’s a very good thing.
Granted the fishing cart thing doesn’t sound like something that should be allowed… I would love to see a video of it happening though!

and if the hatchery released 1.3 million fry, 24,000 would return.

Native Americans do have councils and you can try to reach them and explain your conservation concerns. Get your game plan tight, follow up with outstanding issues and maybe your efforts will change the way things go down your way. Go about it all the right way and you’ll get further. Remember, people catch flies with honey. ~good luck catchin’.
Oh yeah, I’d love to see them using shopping carts on You Tube. Post it and let me know. ; )
