Depends what state that you are in. There are regulations for what species of fish that you can catch, how many, and some lakes only allow certain sizes of fish to be kept (slot limit). References : Minnesota fisherman.

In New York State, it’s stricter than anywhere else on the East Coast from Maine to North Carolina. The reason being New York’s large population. References :

Well, I will echo everyone else. It depends on the state you live in. Google your state fishing regulations and it will lead you to a website that will explain it all. Also, if you go places where they sell fishing licenses (Like Wal Mart), they should have copies of them to hand out for free. References :

Each state has it’s own. Go to a place where you can buy a license, and you can get brochures explaining the rules there.

where ever you fish at, go to the wildlife dept and pick up a book. with regulations in it, it tells you all you need to know.
