Over Fishing – USA
Oct 2003
Alaska’s rich waters are famous for their plentiful supply of fish. But now overfishing is threatening to destroy this precious ecosystem.
The Gulf of Alaska is home to the magnificent Stellar Sea Lion — a mammal who for centuries has lived from this ’sea of plenty’. But as over-fishing has spiralled out of control, the sea lions can no longer find food. The decline of the Stellar Sea Lion has prompted the introduction of tougher fishing regulations in an attempt to halt a worldwide crisis. However local fisheries have been angered by the move which threatens their livelihood. Environmentalists see things differently. “The fishermen will put themselves out of business if they continue,” alleges Ken Stump “if we remove fewer fish now then we will have more for the indefinite future.” To make matters worse, fishermen who have spent years carefully controlling certain species such as wild salmon are finding themselves ousted from the market with the introduction of cheaper ‘farmed’ fish. They are struggling to keep afloat “We are trying to live through this. We will not be giving up.”

this vid says …
this vid says overfishing USA idiot, and the same principals for collecting data on populations are used everywhere, from landings ! My education only lies in fishing ? I see the fish populations in my waters daily, yet biologists sitting behind desks reading paper work are telling me the populations of the fish i target ! KNOW a lot more than you think !!

Please. You’ve pretty much admitted that your education has consisted solely of fishing. Could you kindly leave the GLOBAL ASSESSMENTS of FISH POPULATION to people like ecologists, who tend to get out beyond the NC boundary waters a bit more often than you do? I mean, it’s not like you’re an expert about the fish populations of Alaska, or the Oregon Coast, or Australia, now, IS it? So maybe it’s possible your extensive fishing education didn’t tell you EVERYTHING…isn’t it?

The problem with sealions is that there’s alot more Orca’s now than there was 40 years ago. Orcas eat sealions.

Myth: “farmed …
Myth: “farmed salmon have flooded the market”.
Let’s look at the numbers and the facts: Alaska ranches 1.5 billion salmon each year and has 50 million of those fish return annually. All this ranched salmon is harvested in a 4 month period. Salmon farming on the same coast only harvests 18 million each year over a 12 month period. So, who is it that’s flooding the market?
If you’re wondering how ranching differs (or not) from farming, search in youtube for “Alaska salmon farming”.
