What’s the problem with the Asian carp in the Great Lakes damaging fishing business?

Posted by : admin

If these fish are starting to populate and crowd out native fish, why not increase fishing and fish for Asian carp? It’d be a cheap and readily available food source, after all.

After they destroy the Great Lakes, they will move up the rivers and destroy most inland lakes. It is something the Chinese are doing now, they are in the process of taking over Africa.

There are no natural predators for them here in North America. They are voracious creatures and literally eat out the rest of the fish in any given lake river or pond they end up in. They are tough, resilient and can destroy a complete ecosystem. If they ever get into the Great Lakes then that’s it for the native fish. The Lake Herring, Lake Whitefish, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Muskellunge, Rock Bass, Small mouth Bass, Large mouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Lake Sturgeon, Sunfish, Pumpkinseed fish, The Scuowet, Chinook Salmon Coho Salmon. The frogs, the snakes the turtles and even the invasive lampreys would disappear under the advance of the Asian Carp.
That’s the problem with the carp. They destroy everything in it’s path because there are no natural predators in the waters to keep the populations down.
They will destroy everything else in the great lakes.

They are encouraging people to fish out and consume the Asian carp, but with the knowledge of the fishes bad reputation people are not inclined to be anywhere near it. There is a movement to rename the fish to make it more appetizing.
Even if mass fishing were in place you cannot catch enough of the fish to stop the invasion. There are just too many and they breed too quickly. Sure we can fish them all out of the lakes when they have become insanely overpopulated, but the aftermath of when they finally die out from starvation is 5 giant dead lakes.
The best way to block the carp from Lake Michigan is to close the locks in Illinois, but they are in staunch refusal to do so.
So I guess we can say goodbye to the Great Lakes ecosystem, and the revenues for the people that live off the lakes, and then work up an explanation to Canada as to why the Lakes we share with them are dying.
