fixing fishing rod guides?
i have a g. loomis imx fast action med heavy rod with chiped up rod guides…. its only the tip of the rod were the guide have little chips and niks and scratches and i need to know how to fix it so it wont fray my line as much
its a spinning rod
The fix is to pick up the right size guide for the rod tip and put it on the rod. I would be scared to work on a rod such as the Loomis, but on my cheaper rods I replace them all the time. I heat very carefully the tip of the guide. As I heat it. I am applying pressure to pull it off with a set of pliers. The secret is to get the tip just hot enough to melt the adhesive that holds it on. When it gets soft, the tip pulls off. Clean off the residue on the tip. When you buy the replacement tip, be sure and get you a tube of epoxy that is made for that purpose. Apply it to the tip and line it up properly with the rest of your guides and push it on. A warning here- do not over heat the end of the rod tip, it will ruin the rod.

This applies only to the tip of the rod. The other guides merely have threads that can be cut off

go to your tackle or sporting goods store, buy a new tip for a spin rod, they are like $2-$3 and get some thread and epoxy they are all in the same isle, cut the old resin and thread off very carfully, take a pair of pliers and pull the old tip off. clean the area very well with rubbing alcohol or what ever the store would suggest, place the new tip on and make sure it is completely straight, wrap the thread on it tight, even and thick, the coat it thread and all with the epoxy resin, with a small synthetic paint brush and let it dry, if you have them or can get them wear medical style rubber gloves so you don’t have a reaction to the resin. Also most good sporting goods stores that are mostly fishing gear will put the new tip on for fairly cheap pluss the price of the parts and this way if something happens it would be covered for repair again if something didn’t take. also it will help them get your repeat business. hope this helps

have the guy at the tackle shop change the tip for you. also any other guides that need replacing. they have all the facilities to do this and make it look like new. well worth having a loomis done by a professional.
unless you want to make a $200.00 rod into a $2.00 rod by screwing it up yourself.
