do you use an intermediate and sinking line when fishing for trout on a river ?

February 6th, 2010

i fish the river devon in scotland and i am going to buy a hardy rod witch is 6-7 ft and AFTM 3-4 4-5for the 7 ft but there are no sinking or intermediate lines available so i dont no if you use them in river fishing

A very slow sinking "glass" intermediate is all i will use if i have to go deeper, BUT only on larger rivers. A "glass" or "slime-line" intermediate is one which is clear and has a mono core.

A fast sinker is not needed, those with a Di-7 would reach the bottom of most rivers in less than a few seconds, a slow sinking intermediate could be used on deeper water, often its not needed however.

Its very rare that i will use an intermediate on any river as using fluorocarbon and a weighted fly will get it down to the fish feeding depths with ease.

If its not fishing deep enough with a floater or is being moved by the wind then a sink tip line like the "Midge Tip" by Rio, or the new Ridge Nymph Line by Airflo-
both incorporate a sink tip made from a clear intermediate which sink very slowly and allow you to control the drift of flies in the wind. Orvis also a make a sink tip line.

For a Hardy or Alnwick rod, look no further than the Marksman, at around £349- with a smooth medium to fast action.

Equally a good rod for light rivers is the G Loomis GLX streamdance, at £519- i own both and out of the two would have to say i prefer the G Loomis.

You can buy all of the items i listed above directly from the US from cabelas.com(except the Hardy rod)

Or from the UK from- Fishtec.co.uk-or glasgow angling centre or FMTC(the fishermans tackle company-based in scotland)

Alaska Fly Fishing Trips: What should I take with me?

February 6th, 2010

Hi there,
Can any one help me… i m planing for fly fishing trip in Alaska. Although i dnt know what things i should take with me. Please help guys!

some of this will have been covered by airflows post.

I spent 3 months living out of a backpack traveling alaska. #1 bug dope, highest deet % you can find. alaska is a mosquito infested swamp, it will be worse than you have heard depending on where/when you go. if it isn’t the skeets it’ll be the noseeums. it gets bad enough to be comical….

spare clothes and make sure you have warm stuff and raingear. I went from wearing everything I had up by denali NP one day to sweltering in 99 degree temps in fairbanks in a couple of hours, expect about anything. I brought along a heavy canvas button up shirt for no good reason and found it was an excellent skeet proof shirt, I wore it the whole summer….

bring an extra bottle of bug dope.

fishing gear, you can catch pretty much everything on flys and will likely use them even if you don’t fly fish. at times you can tie a piece of orange yarn on a hook and catch one after another till your arms are sore. chest waders will be way handy, I’d be in felt soles with cleats. do as much reading now as you can, know how to fish deep for salmon and trout before you get up there. have all the gear you need before you show up.

put an extra bottle of bug dope in you fishing vest…..

now, I wanna talk about bears. when you get off the plane in anchorage there is a giant stuffed bear, you’ll walk right by it on the way through the airport. go and stand next to the stuffed bear, it’s important. note the front paws at head height, see that it stands 12 or more feet tall, make jokes about it, then go out and go fish. everywhere I went in AK, and I went all over people I met would tell me "this is one of the worst bear areas in the state". I heard it everywhere, where ever you go, there will be bears. I camped for 3 months and if I had it to do all over I’d have bought the biggest can of bear spray I can find right off. I kept running across and bending down and putting my hands down in these giant tracks that would dwarf my hand with fingers spread as far as I could….. while walking through dense chin high cranberry bushes along beautiful salmons streams. it’s scary up there, they darted grizzlies in downtown anchorage the year I was up there. take my word for it buy the bear spray.

bring a nice camera, alaska may be a mosquito infested swamp but it is beautiful, take lots and lots of pic’s.

got the bug dope?

How to get a Fishing Guide job in Minnesota?

February 6th, 2010

How do you go about getting a Fishing Guide job? Do you just have to go to local services in the area and see if they are hiring? What do they look for when hiring?
Also, is there an age requirement? I am 18 years old, 1 month shy of 19. Fishing is my favorite activity and would love being able to guide as a summer job.

You MIGHT be able to hire on to a resort near the Canadian border or some other major lake resort region.

The Gunflint Lake area, Lake of the Woods, Mille Lacs, Etc.

Hire on to a lodge to do misc tasks, (chopping wood, cleaning cabins, mowing grass, Etc). Most resorts, (in the Spring), hire responsible college students looking for a Summer job.

However, unless you KNOW the area lake you will be guiding EXTREMELY well, your chances of finding any full-time guiding jobs are zero.

Not to mention the fact you need to have a CAPTAINS license to legally take anyone on an excursion. You also need to carry INSURANCE against possible death or dismemberment for your clients. Why insurance? What if one of your clients accidentally falls overboard & drowns…….or worse………..?

Do you have your own guide boat and gear? Very few guides would trust their expensive boat and gear with a "green" 18 YR old…………..Do you think a crusty old guide fisherman is going to SHOW YOU all his great fishing spots & techniques, (so you can STEAL them)???

So, the answer is NO, (for the most part).

Your "best bet" would be to find a resort and see if you could work in the Marina…….

Or you could contact guides in your area and ask them if you could VOLUNTEER your time (that means free- no pay) to help them in any way possible. Some guide may decide he needs extra help……….I doubt it. Guides usually don’t like to disclose there "honey holes" and other techniques to "potential future guides". It’s bad for business….

I rent a camping cabin at the Gunflint Lodge, (http://www.gunflintpines.com/index.shtml ) almost every year. Those times that we’ve stayed at the lodge there has been summer break, college-students, working for a a bunk and minimum wage.

If I was young again and wanted a great experience, as well as an "adventure", I’d sign on for that type of job!

You MEET guides and gobs of fishermen, you get to stay in and around the most pristine Lakes & woodlands in the World, AND get to learn a variety of different jobs you may, (or may not) know. The girl we met this year who was "interning" cleaned cabins, did yard work, worked the Marina and even cooked food in the Cafe. She looked no worse for the wear and even got time to take a quick swim in the middle of the day…………..

Imagine.

On your days off, you would be able to fish some of the most pristine waters IN MN! And you never know, if you learned the Lakes well enough and garnered enough info from local fishermen & guides, in a couple years you could BE guiding, (with your Capt’s license & your OWN boat & tackle, of course).

Hope this helps ya?

How do you find out a species of fish when going fishing?

February 6th, 2010

I go fishing a lot and I catch lots of fish. How to i know the type of fish i catch?

If you’re in the United States, you can consult your state’s fish and game proclamation. The proclamation is a collection of the rules, regulations, and other information for fishing in your state’s fisheries. The proclamation should have descriptions of all the fish you are likely to catch in your state. It will also discuss limits, sizes, and other stuff like which fish are native to your area and which are nonnative or pest species. It will include descriptions of fish that are endangered or threatened. A good proclamation will have color illustrations or photos of the fish, at least for species that are difficult to distinguish.

You may catch fish that you can’t identify, even with the help of a fishing proclamation — ask people who are local to your area, especially the old-timers. Or, take a picture and come back here to ask. There are people here who know fish from Florida to Alaska and everywhere between. A book with fish species in your area can help, too, but eventually you will just know what’s what.

You should probably know what’s what before you fish a lot — you wouldn’t want to get caught with the wrong kind of fish or the wrong number of certain fish. It can result in big fines.

I need to know where are some good fishing spots in south louisisna.?

February 6th, 2010

Preferably roadside or pier/wharf fishing spots in Iberville parish or other surrounding parishes. When the fish bite would be helpful. Thanks.
